Karen Zahka

Karen is a Partner at Trial Lawyers for Justice. She is an experienced and passionate trial lawyer. While she was born and raised in Massachusetts, Karen litigates and tries cases nationwide. She is currently admitted to practice in Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and California. She practices in other jurisdictions via pro hac vice.

Throughout her career, Karen has obtained numerous multi-million-dollar verdicts and settlements, including but not limited to:

  • Nelsy Delgado Juarez v. Massachusetts General Hospital, et al.: In January 2025, Karen obtained an $11.9 million verdict (with interest) in Massachusetts for a 13-year-old girl with epilepsy who was overprescribed an anti-seizure medication, which caused her to suffer from Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and partial vision loss.
  • Christopher Dugan v. Tesla, et al.: In March 2024, Karen was trial counsel in a landmark $60.6 million verdict in Indiana against Tesla on behalf of a young father who suffered a permanent brain injury and partial foot amputation as a result of a Tesla employee’s negligence.
  • In September 2023, Karen obtained a record-setting $20 million settlement in New Hampshire for a client who was overprescribed a gout medication, which caused him to suffer from Stevens-Johnson Syndrome. This is reportedly the largest medical malpractice settlement against a private entity in the State of New Hampshire.
  • Andrea Larkin, et al. v. Dedham Medical Associates, et al.: Karen was trial counsel and secured an over $40 million verdict (with interest) for a 28-year-old woman who suffered a catastrophic stroke hours after labor and delivery of her daughter. Following this victory, Karen fought to defend and succeeded in defending the verdict from the insurance company’s attempt to overturn it on appeal.
  • Edward Xu v. Tufts Medical Center, et al.:  Karen obtained a $24.4 million verdict on behalf of a family whose newborn suffered from severe short bowel syndrome, which requires that he be tube fed for the rest of his life.
  • Estate of Joshua Messier v. Bridgewater State HospitalKaren obtained a $3 million settlement for a family whose 23-year-old disabled son was improperly restrained and killed by correction officers at a Massachusetts prison. This success resulted in sweeping systemic changes to improve the care and treatment of disabled individuals in state prison systems.
  • Estate of Zoe Rosenthal v. Charles J. Davignon, et al.: In April 2021, during the COVID-19 Pandemic, Karen was trial counsel on a $9.5 million verdict obtained on behalf of two daughters whose mother was negligently killed while walking her dog in a crosswalk near her home. According to the court clerk, this result set a record for a non-economic damages verdict for wrongful death with adult heirs in Western Massachusetts.
  • In June 2024, Karen obtained an additional $7.7 million for the Rosenthal family through pursuing insurance bad faith claims against the insurance companies for failure to settle the underlying case when liability and damages were reasonably clear.

While Karen is a zealous advocate for her clients, she is equally committed to supporting them on a personal level. She understands that most clients come to her during some of the most difficult times of their lives and ensures that every step of the legal process is explained clearly and candidly.

Karen received her undergraduate degree from Boston University, where she double majored in Political Science and Psychology. She then graduated from Suffolk University Law School, where she served as the Continuity Editing Assistant for The Journal of Health and Biomedical Law. She graduated from law school with Pro Bono Honors and was recognized for her time and commitment to volunteer legal services programs. Throughout law school, she not only worked full-time but also volunteered her nights and weekends with several non-profit programs dedicated to empowering survivors of domestic violence and assisting them in navigating the legal system to protect themselves and their loved ones.

Her professional accolades include:

  • Leader in the Law – Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly (May 2025) for obtaining one of the top settlements in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 2024.

  • Super Lawyers Rising Star (2016–present), awarded to a select number of attorneys under 40 based on peer recognition and professional achievement.

  • Excellence in the Law: Up & Coming Lawyer – Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly (2022).

  • National Trial Lawyers: Top 40 Under 40 (2019).

Bio

Jakob Z. Norman

Jakob is an experienced trial and appellate lawyer. Before practicing law, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he met Nick Rowley on their first day of basic training. As teenagers, they began learning the values of discipline, teamwork, and integrity; principles they have carried with them into adulthood and continue to uphold in their relentless pursuit of justice.

While Jakob primarily represents individuals who have been injured, his legal career has also included representing criminal defendants in high-profile cases, including wrongful conviction matters. The common thread in each of Jakob’s cases is his deep belief in his client and his commitment to understanding the wrong that must be vindicated. Because he is selective with the cases he takes, Jakob devotes the time needed to truly know each client on a personal level. His dedication to justice has resulted in numerous record-setting settlements and verdicts in multiple states across the country.

Jakob began his legal career working in insurance defense, corporate law, and as a prosecutor. He has also served as a military prosecutor and ethics advisor for both federal and state governments. His experience on “the other side” has proven tactically invaluable in litigation and instrumental in achieving the best outcomes for his clients.

Jakob made national headlines after securing a record verdict in California on behalf of an individual poisoned by a major oil company that had knowingly contaminated the land. He and his team continue to represent individuals harmed by corporate negligence. This includes over 1,000 factory workers exposed to Trichloroethylene (TCE) at levels 300,000 times the EPA limits, and over 1,000 coal miners given dust masks that a major corporation knew were ineffective.

Jakob was appointed to the mass tort leadership team in In Re: Bard Implanted Port Catheter Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 3081, pending in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona. This litigation seeks justice for thousands of individuals injured by a defective medical device.

He also serves as the Executive Director of Trial by Human, a national platform committed to training and empowering trial lawyers. Based on the foundational principles of Nick Rowley’s groundbreaking book, Jakob leads programs and workshops across the country designed to elevate the practice of trial law through hands-on, experience-based education.

While earning his degree in Psychology, Jakob conducted research on the detection of deception, designed and ran jury decision-making studies, and interned at Harvard University, contributing to the CIA’s first-ever fMRI lie detection research.

Jakob has also founded or participated in over 10 startup ventures, including one backed by legendary oil magnate T. Boone Pickens, where he served as President and CEO. With $75 million in startup funding, Jakob helped grow the company into a national and international enterprise. Under his leadership, the company received the prestigious Department of Defense Freedom Award for its support and employment of veterans.

Jakob’s military service spans over three decades in both the Air Force and Army and includes ongoing duty in the Army National Guard. He has advanced through the ranks from enlisted to his current position as a Colonel, holding assignments in transportation, medical, infantry, Judge Advocate General (JAG Corps), Air Defense Artillery, logistics, and senior command/staff positions, including Deputy Chief of Staff – Logistics, Deputy Chief of Staff – Personnel, and Regimental Commander. He currently serves as a Brigade Commander in the National Guard and has received a Certificate of Eligibility to become a Brigadier General. His deployments include post-9/11 activation, Hurricane Katrina relief, the 46th Presidential Inauguration, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom. While deployed, he was a member of the team that conducted the first prosecution of a detainee in coalition forces custody in Afghanistan. Jakob has served on multiple Joint Task Forces and is the recipient of the Army Combat Action Badge, Airborne Wings, Air Assault Wings, Senior Instructor Badge, and more than 24 ribbons and decorations.

In 2017, Jakob served under appointment by the Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Army on one of the Department’s most complex investigations at the Pentagon. He is also an honor graduate and received a Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College, joining the ranks of esteemed alumni such as Dwight D. Eisenhower, Ulysses S. Grant III, Colin Powell, and H. Norman Schwarzkopf.

Bio

Joseph Wilson

Joseph Wilson is considered by many to be one of the elite trial lawyers in the Southeast, if not the nation. To wit, there are few lawyers of his age that have accomplished what he has in such a short span. In an era where very few injury lawyers take cases to a jury trial when insurance carriers act in an unreasonable manner; Joseph has established a reputation based on the significant verdicts he has obtained on behalf of clients.

Results Matter

Joseph garnered attention from his colleagues and Georgia insurance defense lawyers following two significant verdicts. In 2018, a Fulton County jury awarded our client $500,000.00 for injuries she sustained when a deck collapsed as a result of negligence. In 2019, following a highly contested trial involving elite defense counsel; Joseph secured a $584,000.00 jury verdict on behalf of a client injured as a result of a negligent driver of an armored truck. Additionally, he has served as lead counsel in over 25 jury trials which is rare for a lawyer of his age. Many injury lawyers have never tried a case and a vast majority have tried less than 5 jury trials in their career.

Accolades & Awards

Mr. Wilson attended law school at Washington University; considered by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top 20 law schools in the nation. Upon graduation, Joseph was awarded the prestigious John W. Calhoun Trial Practice award for demonstrating excellence in trial advocacy.

As a practicing attorney, Joseph received recognition by National Trial Lawyers as one of the top 40 lawyers under the age of 40. He had previously been selected as one of the top 30 under 30 by the Atlanta Business Chronicle. In 2020, fellow members of the Georgia Bar voted Joseph as a Georgia Super Lawyer Rising Star. He has also been recognized for his outstanding service to Fulton County schools. Giving back to the community and philanthropy remains paramount to his vision and philosophy.

Leadership

Joseph is the past Vice-President of the Emerging 100 of Atlanta and was recently inducted into the prestigious 100 Black Men of Atlanta – one of the youngest members in the entire organization. In addition, he serves as the President of the Stone Mountain Alumni Foundation of Kappa Alpha Psi.

Family

In his free time, Joseph enjoys spending time with his wife Essence, as well as their two boys Jaxson and Kingston at their Atlanta home.
